Driver surrenders license after car overturns on dual carriageway

A driver who’s car overturned on dual carriageway has surrendered his license to officers after he could only read a registration plate three meters away.

Police rushed to the scene on the A1 near the junction with Newcraighall Road in Edinburgh shortly after 12.05pm on Tuesday.

The male driver was uninjured, however officers carried out a roadside eye test and discovered the driver could only read a registration plate from a distance of 3.05m – the legal requirement is 20m.

He subsequently surrendered his licence and the DVLA was notified.

The crash happened in a temporary section of the carriageway where major roadworks are currently taking place.

In a separate incident on the A701 near Penicuik on Monday afternoon, another vehicle was overturned with one person taken to hospital following the single vehicle accident.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We were made aware of a crash involving a single car on the A701 near Penicuik around 5.20pm on Monday, 25 July.

“One person has been taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and recovery has been arranged for the vehicle.”
