POLICE SCOTLAND have seized an industrial safe dumped by group of men on the old disused suburban railway in Edinburgh.
The unidentified gang of approx. 6-8 men in a yellow van, with the partial index 64 XGR, were spotted carrying the safe at around 2am on Monday morning.
Its believed they quickly accessed the old line now popular with dog walkers via fencing cut by workmen at nearby residential development on Murano Place in the Leith area of the city.
A witness that doesn’t wish to be named reported the incident to charity crime stoppers through fear of repercussions.
The white Chubb type industrial safe with bash marks on the front, and drill marks on the top was removed by Police on Wednesday morning.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers in Edinburgh received a report of large item being dumped on the old suburban railway behind Murano Place on Monday, 25 January.
“The safe was seized by officers and enquiries are ongoing.”
Opened in 1884, the Edinburgh Suburban line was built by the Edinburgh Suburban and Southside Junction Railway company carrying passengers on a circular basis through Waverley, but closed in 1962 due to increased competition from buses and tram services.
