Emergency services rushed to the scene after the team came across the injured man at around 1am on Saturday June 11 on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

He became injured after climbing the railings into Princes Street gardens, and the volunteers which included a student paramedic ran to help the man, and subsequently gave emergency treatment to stem the bleeding using a ‘Daniel Baird Foundation‘ bleed kit whilst awaiting arrival of the emergency services.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service used bolt cutting equipment to open the gate, and Paramedics then stretchered the man to the Ambulance and then to Accident and Emergency under blue lights.

Street Assist founder, Neil Logan said: “I spoke to the ambulance technician and he told me that the outcome may have been very different had we not been there and had this piece of kit.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to reports of a man becoming injured on Princes Street, Edinburgh at around 1.15am on Saturday, 11 June, 2022.

“Police assisted emergency services and there was no criminality established.”

The charity has at least five teams out on the streets between 10pm and 4am each Friday and Saturday, and relies on funding from local partners and donations from the public.

Each team carries an extensive first aid kit, including the life saving bleed kit that costs £96.00, and Naloxone a drug that reverses the effects of an overdoes at £27.50.

On Saturday evening volunteers were also ask by Police to assist with a male who had taken an overdose of unknown drugs.

The team acted quickly and administered Naloxone and the male was then taken to hospital by the Ambulance Service.

Over the course of the weekend the teams attended over 30 calls, from Edinburgh Police, pubs, night clubs and concerned members of the public in which both life saving pieces of kit were utilised.
