A cyclist has captured the moment he has an argument with a police officer over who has right of way – but who is in the wrong?

The 3-minute clip posted to YouTube last week shows the cyclist waiting to cross from one cycle lane to the other outside St Leonard’s police station in Edinburgh.

However instead of joining the cycle lane at the crossing, he instead cycled diagonally across to the junction where a officer in a van is waiting to join the main road.

He claims to have pointed to the cycle lane, but it’s possible the officer thought he was turning off as he hadn’t already joined the cycle lane.

The problem is clear that with new infrastructure all road users are not fully conversant with how to use it safely.
