Footage shows school children risking their lives as they get stuck on level crossing after blatantly ignoring warning lights and lowering barriers.
The incident happened at Glebe Road Level Crossing, at Dunmurry Station in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on Friday April 1, at 3.24pm.
Train Enthusiast, Jack Mctaggart was filming at the crossing when four school boys continued to walk onto the railway crossing despite warning beacons, audible alarm and lowering barriers.
Two of them hurry and manage to cross to safety, however the remaining two became trapped inside the barriers.
Immediate safety measures were implemented by Transport Operator Translink, who ensured the train was held at the station until the crossing was clear.
Jack, 18 said: “That’s absolutely pathetic that is, these people will always run the reds of course.
“I’ve seen this before, usually they would raise the barriers, and then there is an emergency sequence and then they will just put them [barriers] back down.
“CCTV cameras are there but they don’t seem to see them, there is a train right there they would be absolutely busted.”
Seconds later the barriers lift and another school boy runs through and the other boys finally get to safety.
Approximately seven vehicles manage to cross in the 30 seconds before the beacons and siren restart and barriers lower again – this time around a woman only just makes it across safely.
The uniform worn by the children is thought to be that of nearby Rathmore Grammar School, however the school did not respond when contacted.
A Translink spokesperson said: “Safety is our top priority at all times.
“We are aware of this incident – appropriate safety measures were put in place to ensure these young people could safely leave the crossing.
“We frequently run safety campaigns, including in-school campaigns, advising of the dangers of misuse of train lines and encouraging safe use of our crossings and railway network.
“We have reported this incident to the school.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland have confirmed that the incident wasn’t reported to them.
