The blaze on Monday (16/09/2024) evening caused damage to an area of the site used to store mattresses and similar materials.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent seven fire engines to the site on Inverurie Road shortly after 6.30pm.

Fire crews contained and extinguished the fire within two hours, and the centre was able to open with a reduced service yesterday (Tuesday).

Pictures obtained by SWD Media show extensive damage to the roof/canopy of the facility, and piles of partially burned mattresses and other materials.

The latest incident comes after work began earlier this year to rebuild another Suez facility in the granite city that was devastated by fire in July 2022.

It is estimated the full rebuild will cost in the region of £30 million and won’t be operational until mid 2025.

Suez said that while impossible to prove conclusively, it believed it was “highly probable” the Altens fire was caused by a battery or battery-operated device that a resident had put into their recycling bin.
