A RECKLESS driver overtook a HGV before a near miss with group of pedestrians crossing the road.

The incident happened on Thursday September 9 at 10.33am, on the A5189 St Peter’s Bridge in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.

Police have confirmed they are reviewing the footage that was recorded from the cab of a HGV.

The clip begins as Jamie Brown moves off from traffic lights.

Despite merge in turn road markings the driver overtook at speed and didn’t see the men or woman crossing until the last moment.

Arguably this wasn’t the safest place for them cross, as they were standing in the right turn lane for the petrol station.

However this could have resulted in a potentially nasty collision, and the danger was clearly felt by at least two of the group as one pulled another back with barely anytime to spare.

Although the driver of the Citroen C4 braked in enough time, he or she did not stop and drove on.

Looking back the incident Jamie admits he should have stopped to allow them to cross safely.

Sharing the clip online he wrote: “Got to overtake the truck any any cost.”

The video has since been viewed over 20,000 times and received over 200 reactions, comments and shares.

One user commented: “What an idiot in the car, also what an idiotic place to cross the road – why do people insist on driving like they are on Forza?”

Another said: “That would have been at least one fatality!”

A third wrote: “These are the type of drivers that are a danger on our roads, if you need to slam on your brakes you are driving too fast.”

A fourth added: “That was about as close as anyone wants to come to death!

“Lucky the one pedestrian stopped the other from a certain death.

“Way too many people in this world should be confined to public transport.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “An officer from the force’s Road Crime Team is reviewing the footage and will contact Mr Brown in due course.”
