Sister leads tributes for woman, 19, who died after car being chased by police crashed into lamp post

A 19-year-old woman who died in hospital after a car crashed into a lamppost as the driver failed to stop for police has been named by her sister in a moving tribute.

Shaunta Rhodan, 19, was one of five women in a Vauxhall Astra that crashed on Greyhound Lane in Streatham at 4.25am on Sunday March 28.

London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade also attended the scene but despite their efforts, Shaunta succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday afternoon

Two woman sustained serious injuries and the other two escaped with minor injuries and were later discharged from hospital – all four women were arrested by Police.

Shaunta was known as ‘Shaunte’ on social media as her friends kept saying her name that is pronounced ‘Shaantay’ wrong.

Sacha wrote: “Gone way too soon, lil sis. You’re 20th was gonna be grand.

“We are gonna miss you but you’re in a better place now. We will get justice for you. R.I.P, Shaunte Rhoden.

“Shaunte lived her damn life! 19 yrs of great memories. She has left us in agony and fits of laughter, all at the same time. It’s a lot, y’all.”

As is normal practice the Metropolitan Police informed The Directorate of Professional Standards the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

An investigation has been launched by the police watchdog and they will look at whether officers ‘were actively pursuing the vehicle’.

IOPC regional director Sal Naseem said: “Our thoughts are with the family of this woman and all those affected by this tragic incident.

“We have made contact with the family of the woman who has died and those of the two seriously injured women, to explain our role and how our investigation will progress.

“We need to understand what happened and we are appealing for anyone who witnessed events last Sunday morning to contact us to help with our independent investigation.

“There is a mandatory requirement for forces to refer to us incidents like this which result in death or serious injury.

“Our investigation will thoroughly examine the circumstances and whether appropriate policies and procedures were followed. We will seek to establish, among other things, whether or not the police were actively pursuing the vehicle.”
