A stolen mini convertible dumped in the union canal is becoming an attraction and should be given its own fringe venue number.

Locals walking, cycling or walking their dog on the canal tow path are stopping to discuss how the luxury motor was driven into the canal and why.
Due to the location, officers were unable to remove the vehicle as their recovery contractor doesn’t have the equipment needed – therefore Scottish Canals has assumed responsibly for removal.
Today marks one week since the vehicle was discovered, and according the Scottish Canals website they are still working with various organisations to have the car removed.
Although logistically it will be challenging to remove the mini from the canal, many locals are worried about the risk of pollution and the affect this will have on wildlife.

In recent days an operative was spotted cleaning the surrounding area scooping debris from water the car, he dismissed any suggestion that oil or fuel could be leaking from the convertible.
Children have also been spotted sitting in the vehicle whilst in situ, and the windscreen has been further damaged by stones – nearby CCTV is apparently being utilised to monitor the area in the interim.
Two traffic cones have been placed on the headrests of the rear cream leather seats in order to provide visibility for passing canal boats.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.10am on Sunday, 4 August, 2024, officers were made aware of a vehicle in the Union Canal in the Wester Hailes Road area of Edinburgh.
“No-one was in the vehicle.”

A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: “A small car has been found in the Union Canal near Bridge 6b.
“The canal channel is partially blocked but passage remains open with care.
“Discussions about plans for the recovery of the car are still ongoing.
“Any plans for removal will be put on our website.”
