Cyclist fails to stop after collision costing car owner £300

A cyclist has failed to stop after a collision with a parked car causing £300 of damage as the wing mirror is ripped from the vehicle in South London.

The hit-and-run crash happened on Greyhound Lane, Streatham in South London earlier this month.

CCTV footage appears to show the cyclist looking at a mobile phone in his right hand prior to hitting the parked blue Mini.

The rider and his Lime bike came crashing down on the road along along with the wing mirror – appearing uninjured he immediately got up and continued on his journey.

Although using a hand held device whilst cycling is not illegal in itself, but ultimately the cyclist would likely to be deemed negligent in this instance.

The matter could have easily been resolved as he is on a hired bike, and Lime include insurance as standard, however he decided to commit a crime and cycle away leaving the car owner with a hefty repair bill.

John Mulvey provided his neighbour with video clip of the incident and she said she would send to her insurance company.

The video also shared online has been viewed 6,500 times and has reignited calls for cyclists to have number plates.

One user commented: “Another reason cyclists should have number plates and insurance, they think they own the road.”

Another wrote: “I don’t mind cyclists, some are courteous and others aren’t, in my opinion they should be charged the same a driver would be for using their phone whilst driving, now the mini owner will have to pay out themselves, stupid really.”

A third said: “That’s why you shouldn’t cycle and use your phone.”

A fourth added: “Cyclists…. Good luck getting a penny out of that one!”

Lime who operate a fleet of 700 e-bikes have said that they will look into the incident.

Lime added: “We expect all Lime riders to respect the rules of the road and the terms of Lime’s User Agreement.”

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We have run a search and have no trace of a crime report for the location/date provided.”

Earlier this year Italy announced plans to mandate insurance and number plates for bicycles and e-scooters, however the UK government previously stated that: “The costs and complexity of introducing such a system would significantly outweigh the benefits.”

A poll conducted by the Mirror Online found that out of 4,186, a whopping 2,898 (69.2%) said Yes, cyclists should have number plates and 1,231 (29.4%) didn’t like the idea – whereas 57 (1.4%) had different ideas.
