Shocked Resident: Workmen sent sparks flying through my window

SHOCKING footage shows workmen angle grinding sending sparks through open window and allowing pedestrians to walk on pavement below.

The incident happened on Monday at 8.50pm on Rodney Street in Edinburgh and was recorded by a local reporter.

Amey were carrying work on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council as part of the street light upgrade project.

In order to upgrade the top section of the lamppost is cut off, and the new unit has a sleeve to attach to the remaining pole.

One of the workmen in charge admitted that he should’ve coned off the pavement and it was his fault.

A resident was also outside videoing the workmen after hot fragments of metal apparently came flying in through her open window.

She was also recording the workmen to show her father who works as a health and safety officer.

Resident, Jodie said: “I was shocked when I saw sparks coming in my window, I wondered what the hell was going on.”

The sparks that result from cutting or grinding metal can be dangerous, they can they burn the eyes or skin and also ignite combustible or flammable materials nearby.

Despite the omission from the workman, the firm have said that they have a safe system of working to deal with the activity they were carrying out – and insist that this was adhered to.

The council said: “We are happy that Amey have safe working practices in place.”

The street light upgrade project is due to end this year and is expected to save the council £54m over the next 20 years.
